Perspective and Jasper Johns Project
Jasper Johns created colourful, textured images using text and numbers. We will use his work as a starting point for our project.
The first week of this course will be based in observational drawing. I will give a demonstration on the principles of perspective to aid students. Students are asked to bring boxes with logos, patterns and type on them to the first class. An assemblage of these interlocking geometrical shapes will be the starting point for this project. We will draw from this still life. The drawings will be used as the departure point for an abstract painting. I will also take photos for students to work from. The final outcome of this project will be a colourful exciting painting as well as a further understanding of how some abstract painters operate.
Beginners Transcription Project
This project will involve working from the painting of an artist. If you are a beginner it will allow you to comprehend how artists have translated the visual world into colours, tones and brush strokes. The project will help you develop your drawing, colour mixing and painting skills. I will bring a range of reproductions to work from.
You may want to bring your own reproduction of a much loved painting to work from.
The emphasis of this project will not be on copying, but on understanding your subject. Many great artists, from Degas to Rubens, worked from the artists of the past to gain a greater insight into painting.
Please contact Ben from the "contact us" page for more information about either of these courses.
